Learning within the classroom

This year we will have Mrs Howell supporting us within the classroom. Other members of staff will support the children through interventions also. Mrs Aartse-Tuyn will teach RE every Tuesday and PSHE (Jigsaw) on a Thursday.

Our topics this term are:

A story like the wind

English –  Our new text is A Story Like the Wind. This a fantastic brilliant text! Our writing outcomes will be a Flashback Narrative and a Newspaper Report.

Power maths 6b

Maths – In Maths we use the Power Maths programme. In this term we will be covering Decimals, Percentages, Algebra, Measure and Ratio and Proportion.

Science – Our topic for this term is Evolution and Inheritance. We will look at characteristics which we inherit, how animals and humans have evolved over time and the reasons they have evolved based on adapting to their environment.

History – We will be looking at the Mayans, their way of living and their Gods.

Geography – We will be looking at different Mountain regions and locating them on a map, understanding how they have been formed and the different features of a mountain.

Our PE day is Tuesday afternoon each week. Please ensure that children are coming to school in their PE kit that day.

In Year 6, homework will go out on a Friday and will be handed in the following Friday. In each piece of homework, there will be spellings practice. It is really important that the children learn their spellings as they will be tested on them every Friday. They will also have a Maths task to complete. If children do not hand their homework in on a Friday, then they will have to stay in that lunchtime to finish it.

Alongside Homework in their books, there are lots of different websites they can be accessing.

Fit Friday

Every Friday, we partake in Fit Friday. This encourages the children to engage in a healthy lifestyle by making healthy food choices and exercising. Therefore, every Friday, children are able to come to school in their PE kit. Children must not wear any denim and have appropriate shoes for exercising. Children who bring a lunch from home will need to have healthy food options, avoiding foods like crisps, chocolate, sweets, etc. We will also partake in a sporting activity in the afternoon.

Please familiarise yourselves with our uniform policy. This consists of black shoes (not trainers), black or grey trousers/ skirts, a blue or green polo top, a navy jumper or cardigan. If children have their ears pierced, they must be studs only and need to be removed for PE. Hair dye that is of an unnatural colour is not part of our uniform policy.

As a parent or carer, you can play a key role in helping your child to stay safe online. Take a look at these resources on how you can support your child to use the internet safely, responsibility and positively.
