Welcome back! I hope you had a restful half term break.

This half term we will be continuing with our Power Maths, we will be studying the book ' The Highwayman' in English. In Geography we will be looking at the USA which will also link in to some art work and our science topic will be 'Forces'. Year 5 will continue with their music lessons and PE will remain on a Tuesday afternoon.

September 2020.

Here are some of the exciting we will be learning in year 5 in this first half term:

  

   

 

 

Welcome back.

I hope that you have all had a great first few weeks back and are ready for year 5. I am already amazed by how much the children have changed since I taught them in year 3. I am looking forward to a fun packed year full of learning and hope you are too. I realise that this term looks a little different than what we are normally used to so if you do have any questions or queries then please let me know.

 

PE.

This year the children will need to come to school in their PE on a Tuesday. PE will again be provided by an external company called Sport Scape.

With the weather turning colder, it is advisable to have appropriate outdoor PE kit as some sessions will take place outside.

Anyone with pierced ears will need to bring plasters into school and put them over their earrings for PE or take their earrings out (please practice this at home).

 

Our Learning.

In English, we will base our work around the book ‘Henry’s Freedom Box’ by Ellen Levine. We will also be using Active Learn on the iPad and looking at the year 5/6 spellings and grammar.

In Maths, we will be extending our learning about place value and number. We will be using our new maths scheme called’ Power Maths’ The children will also have access to RM Easimaths using the iPads

In Science we will be looking at Earth and Space and our History topic is the Anglo Saxons.

In year 5 the children will have music lessons provided by The Love Music Trust on a Thursday afternoon where they will learn to play an instrument. In previous years, the children have really engaged with and enjoyed this. Music lessons will commence on Thursday 17th September.

 

Homework.

This term for homework the children should access RM Easimaths and Active Learn – ideally for 15 minutes every evening. The children have their login details in their reading diaries. If they are unable to access these at home, then times tables and spellings should be practiced. There will not be any written homework sent home and anything extra that is done must be kept at home.

The children should also be reading at home every night and recording it in their reading record. Reading books and diaries need to be brought into school every day.

 

Behaviour.

Children will be rewarded for making good choices and following the Golden Rules. These will be in the form of stickers, blue marks and helping the teacher jobs. There will also be a year 5 prize box for anyone seen to be going above and beyond my expectations in any aspect of school life.

The children are aware that if they make the wrong choices, e.g., refusal to complete work, disruption in class, causing harm or distress to others, then there will be sanctions. These will be verbal warnings, orange marks, reflection time, paying back minutes, completing unfinished classwork (due to refusal) at home and letters or telephone calls home to parents - in line with the school’s behaviour policy.

 

Finally, just a reminder to bring a filled water bottle to school every day as the school water fountains cannot be used at this time and thank you to you all for adhering to your designated drop off and pick up time slots.
