At Daven primary school we have been teaching maths using the mastery approach for several years now. In September 2020, we introduced a new maths scheme called Power Maths.
Power Maths is a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths.
- Written specifically for UK curriculum classrooms by leading mastery experts from around the world and recommended by the UK’s Department for Education.
- An enriched approach that cleverly combines interactive teaching tools, rich and quality textbooks, and practice books.
- Built around a child‑centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths and focuses on helping all children to build a deep understanding of maths concepts.
Power Maths is built on a world‑class and unique mastery teaching model created by leading educational experts from the UK and China.
- Power Maths Reception brings the core concepts of mastery to your littlest learners!
At Daven Primary School, we offer a broad curriculum that will challenge, inspire, and motivate children to become the best learners that they can be in Mathematics.
In our Maths sessions, we use concrete and pictorial strategies alongside reasoning and problem solving where children can use experimentation and methodical working to assist them.
Our children are exposed to the Mastery approach of learning and therefore, all being challenged in Maths daily. This approach to Maths continuously allows access to reasoning and problem solving. They have access to a wide range of concrete, pictorial, and abstract resources to use in the classroom during Maths lessons.
Reflection is also a key aspect of the Power Maths approach. At the end of each lesson, we evaluate our understanding of what we have learnt and what we have focused on to develop our mathematical thinking. The children work collaboratively and independently and are encouraged to make relevant choices and access the resources they need confidently.
Our children understand the importance of being resilient learners and that making mistakes and getting things wrong help us to learn. The Power Maths approach ensures that children are exposed to a range of different learning styles and techniques. This includes being determined and positive towards problem solving and persevering when it becomes challenging. Through the reflect activities, children need to explain or show their understanding from the lesson, often using specific mathematical terminology.
In September 2021 we introduced Times Tables Rockstars. This is an intensive times tables daily practice. All KS1 and KS2 children in school have access to it and have been allocated time each day to complete a session.
Don't forget all children also have access to RM Easimaths. Please ask your child's teacher if you are unsure of their login details.
Here are some useful maths videos
Assessment in Maths is done in several ways here at Daven.
Teachers assess during lessons through questionning and marking. This assessment informs future lessons and enables teachers to plan interventions as necessary. Power Maths provides end of unit checks (mini assessments). These show what the children have learnt during a particular topic. Standardised tests (NFER) are completed at the end of every term. This provides data in line with national standards and can be used to judge if a child is at the expected level for their age.
