At Daven Primary School children are regularly encouraged both to make their own music and to enjoy and appreciate that of other individuals, communities and cultures. We aim to provide opportunities for all children to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, as well as being given the opportunities to perform to a wider audience. At Daven Primary School, we see music as a practical and creative expression of ideas, thoughts and feelings. We follow the National Curriculum by using the Love Music Trust units to support teaching, along with expert tuition from outside agencies.
At Daven our aims of music teaching are to enable all children to:
• perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
• learn to sing and use their voices
• have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument (particularly in Year 5)
• to use technology appropriately
• to create and compose music on their own and with others
• understand and explore how music is created
Year 5 children are taught to play a musical instrument for a year through Love Music and the wider opportunities scheme.
Year 3 children are taught to play an instrument via the Rocksteady Music programme throughout the year and have chanes to perform to a variety of audiences.
Opportunities are made in school to share musical experiences be it through the school choir, class assemblies, concerts and other celebrations.
Implementation
We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical activities. We provide opportunities for all children to sing, listen to and appreciate different styles and genres of music. We teach them the skills of recognising, commenting and reflecting on pulse, pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics and texture in music. Children work collaboratively with others to make music and show how individuals compose and organise music. We also begin to teach children to explore some of the features of musical notation and to develop an understanding of the history and culture of music.
Music lessons are taught regularly in class and by outside agencies. In Year 5 children are given the opportunity to learn to play an instrument with peripatetic music teachers. Our school uses the national curriculum for music by accessing the scheme of work from Love Music Trust and have continual access to their expertise. Music is often taught and used within other areas of the curriculum, and to support and enhance the work done within the topics planned.
Impact
At Daven Primary School, we aim to provide quality teaching of Music to ensure that we encourage children to be confident in their skills, ensuring progression through the school.
By the end of Key Stage 2, we will ensure children will:
- play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
- improvise and compose music for a range of purposes
- listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
- use and understand musical notations
- appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
- develop an understanding of the history of music.
