What is PSHE Education?
PSHE Education (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

Intent

We want pupils at Daven Primary School to have enough knowledge so they know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. We wim to ensure pupils are given the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. We believe that when taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

Due to the demographic of Daven Primary School, and our below national average ethnic minorities pupils on roll, it is important that we build upon the children’s experiences to provide a wider understanding of the diversity in our country, and across the world, as a whole in terms of race, religion, relationships.  The intent is to develop tolerant, respectful young people, prepared for their future lives in the wider world.

The Jigsaw curriculum holds children at its heart and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. It has a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, builiding resilience and nutruing mental and physical health.

Implementation

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of learning as part of our PSHE offer. Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (known as puzzles), each containing six lessons (referred to as the 'pieces') covering each academic year.

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Session are planned, resourced and delivered whilst being mindful of a variety of learning styles including creative and visual approaches to allow accessibility and adaptability for all learners. Medium-term plans for each year group, are carefully structured to adapt the sessions to the areas of need for the pupils at our school, as well as ensuring curriculum coverage.

At the bottom of this page, you can find the progression maps for each puzzle: from Early Years to Year 6.

Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) (in purple) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills (in green).

In addition to Jigsaw, we have weaved in the No Outsider's vision to our long-term plan (LTP) to ensure we offer an inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people for life as global citizens. Our PSHE LTP includes key texts from the No Outsiders programme, which aim to help teachers enhance the Jigsaw themes. Some of the texts are used to explore key topics such as refugee week.

Impact

Through the successful implementation of our PSHE curriculum, our children become empowered by their own sense of identity and individuality. They will be able to listen to and understand the views and beliefs of others, building positive relationships with all despite their differences. As an inclusive school, our teachers are confident to tackle and explore difficult situations, using positive language to create a sense of belonging for all.

Our pupils leave the primary phase as:

  • Children who will develop positive and healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
  • Children who will understand the physical and emotional aspects involved in RSE at an age-appropriate level.
  • Children who will have respect for themselves and others.
  • Children who will have positive body images.
  • Children who will know how to keep themselves safe: physically, mentally and technologically.
  • Children who will understand that the world is diverse and that everyone has the right to equality.
  • Children who will be able to articulate themselves clearly using age-appropriate language surrounding the key themes of PSHE.
  • Children who will have the building blocks necessary to continue to learn and develop after they leave Daven Primary School.

We assess the above through both formative and summative assessments. A 'To Improve Next Time' (TINT) sheet is completed by each learner at the end of the session, they RAG rate their self-assessment towards the objectives and give themselves a target for next time. In addition, at the end of each unit, teachers carry out a summative assessment against the objectives of the unit in order to ensure understanding and have an insight into how the learners are progressing and any misconceptions. PSHE lessons build on prior learning and encourage revisiting of prior knowledge. All learners within PSHE are suitably challenged and supported where necessary.
