Intent

Science at Daven Primary School aims to teach our children the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to question and understand concepts and phenomena that occur in the world around them. Our science planning is split into 7 key areas: plants; animals including humans; living things and their habitats; materials; energy; forces; Earth and space; and making connections.

The National Curriculum programme of study for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the
specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science
through different types of scientific enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Implementation

At Daven Primary School, science lessons are planned to ensure the National Curriculum is covered. We assess children’s work through observations, the use of Flashback 4, marking and end-of-unit low-stakes quizzes. These assessments inform the class teacher’s planning for future lessons.

Wherever possible, children are given opportunity to assess and reflect upon their own learning. Assessments may take the form of a practical activity, a written assessment or a quick quiz. The teacher records these assessments to inform reports to parents and the next class teacher at the end of the year.

The roadmap below illustrates how the units of learning have been mapped out to develop children's skills and knowledge over time.

Impact

At Daven we are enabling all of our children to develop their scientific skills in order to prepare them for the ever-changing world we live in. Each phase will ensure the pupils have the skills and knowledge needed to support them in their next unit-of-learning/phase of education.
